WordPress iPhone App reaches version 1.21

March 22, 2009

It would be very unfair of me hosting this blog on WordPress, not to mention the excellant WordPress iPhone App. Indeed this very post has been entirely written, constructed and posted in it.

The application is now at version 1.21 and available through the Appstore

This version fixes an image rotation issue and replaces the application icon with the right one ( it’s no longer squished)

I will be the first to admit I haven’t updated these pages for a while, and was prompted to return when seeing the update for WordPress. Now I can see why I chose to host a blog here, the application makes it completely painless. I simply log in with my WordPress details and have almost full control over my blog. The screenshots below should give you a good idea of what to expect. Go on give it a try :)

Big Boss Releases ‘Categories’ Beta

September 2, 2008

In my books one of THE most usefull apps for the iPhone is Categories. I have used previous versions prior to iPhone OS 2.0 and have been keeping everything crossed that it would make it across to 2.0.
It gives you the abilities to group applications into folders on your springboard. For example you might want group them like so:

  • GAMES folder: Lander, Billy Frontier, TapTap Revenge etc
  • MUSIC Folder: Simplify, Remote, Midomi, iPod
  • What this then does is reduce your icons down from 7 on the spring board to just 2 folders which you click on to reveal the enclosed apps.

I have yet to install this and so cannot give you any feedback as yet but heres hoping its all good and can handle Apple Apps and Cydia/ Installer apps

    Details below are from Sleepers.net

Categories v2.00b for iPhone OS 2.0 is ready for testing if there are any takers. I would like to get it out there a bit before putting it on high volume Cydia. Therefore, I am going to put it here for now. Those that install it should make sure they are ok with beta software that has not even undergone much engineering level testing.

This is for advanced users. In order to install this, you are expected to understand how to use SSH. If these instructions are complicated, you should wait a couple more days for the actual Cydia release which will be coming soon.

    Install instructions:

    1) Grab the deb file here.
    2) SCP it onto your iphone in /tmp (or use wget)
    3) SSH into your iPhone and type: dpkg -i /tmp/categories_2.01b.deb

Please read the instructions inside the help button carefully. They can also be viewed here.

Also, anyone that is doing some testing, if you find serious issues, please try to get me detailed reproduction steps. Please no reports that are “it doesn’t work” or such. I need to be able to reproduce the problem(s) in order to fix them.

Finally, the updater code for Cydia has not yet been written. So I will not be able to send out an update until at least late Monday (pacific time) if one is needed.

    Searcher app

    September 2, 2008

Today I opened up Cydia to find a suprise. Inside I found an app called Searcher with only a brief description on the first screen and no detail once clicked on other than the source of sleeper.net and author Zac White

Normally I would not take a chance on an app with little idea of it’s function but I trust bigboss/ sleepers.net having used many their apps and tutorials.

After a very short install the searcher icon appeared on springboard and I clicked with anticipation. This app is a great idea, it works a little like the google desktop search but on your iPhone. A simple search bar at the top allows you to search across a whole bunch of iPhone features including contacts, SMS, email, bookmarks and calender entries all at the same time. The results are listed under the search criteria under the relevant heading.

There are some settings you can change by clicking the little cog in the top left of the screen including how many results to display and which features to search.

Overall I was pleased with this app, my only wish is that you you had the option to launch into SMS, calender, safari straight from the app rather than only being able to view the details within it. Maybe that will come in another update

App of the moment – Evernote

    September 2, 2008

If like me you have the memory retention of a Goldfish or simply have such a busy life that you need prompting for things once in a while, then Evernote may just be our saving grace.

    The Official website says

Evernote allows you to easily capture information in any environment using whatever device or platform you find most convenient, and makes this information accessible and searchable at any time, from anywhere.

What this means in real terms is that now you can write notes, take photos, & record audio on your iPhone, upload them and then view them anywhere you have access to a web browser or have the FREE PC/MAC client installed. The beauty is that the sync is a two way process, your able to view all the uploads from your PC back on your iPhone too.

I’ve been using the iPhone Application for a couple of days now and other than the very occassional crash back to Springboard I am very pleased with its functionality. Once youve got a bunch of notes loaded they can be searched not only by text written in the notes and tags youve allocated but also by text that is in a photo!

Have a look at the Evernote Demo

You can download the app for Free from the appstore here. You do need to create an account with Evernote but again this is free and gives you a monthly upload limit of 40GB

    iComic & ComicViewer

    September 1, 2008

Listed in Cydia’s Changes are two new applications iComic & ComicViewer. The description is as follows:

“Unfortunately for comic fans, iTunes converts all photos (or jpeg comic images) to a downscaled resolution when transferring to your iPhone or iPod touch so comic jpegs are unreadable. ComicViewer and iComic utilise the touch-screen zoom, landscape view and accelerometer to provide a great portable electronic comic book reader and zipped image viewer.”

Just installing these now so news on what they are like as yet, if you already have these then do let me know how your getting on with them

    Cydia Update

    September 1, 2008

Today saw the release of a minor update to Cydia. It is available via Cydia itself and the application asks you on launch if you wish to install the update now or later.

Once installed the update fixes a minor issue where the ZodTTD’s repository was causing a “POSIX: Connection Timed Out error” due to large traffic volumes.

It also now gives you the option to cancel the downloading / updating of the Database, Release & Packages on startup

Otherwise no big changes to report
